Who is Kevroy Venson?

Affectionately called Venson by the Jamaican track and field community, he is a middle and long distance track and field athlete from Kingston, Jamaica. The lean athletic body junior athlete attends the Calabar High School in Kingston/St Andrew, and is one of the stand-out in high school competition.

His attitude for the events is a sign that this young man has future plans to take his country’s flag on the global stage and create history. Venson, like many athletes, has his own marker on what he wants to accomplish. It was the year 2020 when he shifted his focus to the world stage eyeing global competition. His main objective was set on obtaining the qualifying mark to book his space on the Jamaican team for the world junior (under-20) championships, which was schedule for July in Kenya.

Then COVID-19 happen

Like all other industries, sports is having it’s fair share of unfavorable impact, leaving participants and spectators hungry and wanting to get back in the game. Starting off his season with a bang in preparation for global competition, he produced personal best (PB) of 3.53.87 and 14.55.67 in the 1500m and 5000m respectively in February 2020.

Unfortunately his 2020 dreams with an impeccable form were shattered as a result of the global pandemic. In the world of track and field, an athlete running PB that early in the season, is a sign of what will come as the season progresses, but 2020 was not to be, not just for Venson, but for the world of sports.

Achievements

A standout at the junior level, he is a six (6) times double winner in the 1500m and 5000m at the prestigious high school championship known as, Boys Champs. The multi-talented Venson is also the defending champion at the Caribbean championship known as, the CARIFTA Games.

At just age 18 and creating a buzz at the school level, he is described by some sports journalists in Jamaica as the ‘smooth operator’ and one of ‘the most deceptive athlete’ on the track. More often than less running from the back of the pack, he was a nightmare to his rivals from the youth level , and still maintain that as a senior.

I am just saying, make a mental note of this name, he is on the rise and he is determined to show the world of track and field that he is here.
